憂う
Meaning
To grieve; to lament; to be worried about. A literary and elevated word expressing deep concern, sorrow, or anxiety — often about societal or national issues.
A Group 1 (godan) verb in the classical -u pattern (conjugates as 憂わない, 憂い, 憂う). The modern variant 憂える (ichidan) also exists but 憂う is preferred in formal and literary writing. Expresses a profound, ongoing concern rather than momentary worry — the kind of sorrow felt by those who see larger problems unfolding. Commonly paired with objects such as 将来 (future), 社会 (society), or 行く末 (fate).
