Meaning
Mutual improvement through friendly rivalry; striving together by competing and encouraging each other.
A yojijukugo (four-character idiom) describing a relationship in which two or more people push each other to grow through healthy competition and mutual criticism. It is always positive in nuance: the competition brings out the best in all parties. Commonly used in sports, academia, and professional settings to describe an ideal peer dynamic.
