差し迫る
Meaning
To be imminent; to be pressing; to be urgently approaching.
A Group 1 (godan) compound verb combining 差し (directional prefix) and 迫る (to press close, to draw near urgently). Unlike 近づく, which is neutral, 差し迫る carries a sense of pressure or threat — as if a deadline, crisis, or danger is bearing down without pause. Frequently used in formal writing and news reporting to convey urgency.
Examples
- 締め切りが差し迫っているのに、まだ半分しか書けていない。 The deadline is pressing and I've only managed to write half of it.
- 差し迫った危機に対応するため、緊急会議が招集された。 An emergency meeting was convened to deal with the imminent crisis.
- 経営危機が差し迫る中、従業員への説明が急務となった。 With a management crisis bearing down, explaining the situation to employees became an urgent priority.
