Pronunciation /ɾeɴ.ɾi.tsɯ/

Meaning

Coalition; alliance; federation. In politics, a government or electoral arrangement formed by two or more parties that cooperate to achieve a shared goal, typically forming a parliamentary majority.

Most commonly appears in 連立政権 (renritsu seiken, coalition government) and 連立与党 (renritsu yotō, coalition ruling parties). Japan has been governed by coalition governments for much of the post-1994 period, notably the long-running LDP–Komeito coalition. 連立 involves explicit negotiation over cabinet portfolios and policy priorities, and its stability depends on maintaining consensus between coalition partners.

Examples

  1. 単独過半数を確保できなかった与党は、他の政党との連立交渉を開始した。 Unable to secure a majority on its own, the ruling party began coalition negotiations with other parties.
  2. 連立政権の枠組みは保ちつつも、政策の方向性をめぐって両党の溝が深まりつつある。 While maintaining the framework of the coalition government, the gap between the two parties over policy direction is widening.
  3. 連立を離脱した小政党が野党に転じたことで、与党側の議席が大幅に減少した。 When a small party withdrew from the coalition and joined the opposition, the ruling bloc's seats were significantly reduced.
