連立
Meaning
Coalition; alliance; federation. In politics, a government or electoral arrangement formed by two or more parties that cooperate to achieve a shared goal, typically forming a parliamentary majority.
Most commonly appears in 連立政権 (renritsu seiken, coalition government) and 連立与党 (renritsu yotō, coalition ruling parties). Japan has been governed by coalition governments for much of the post-1994 period, notably the long-running LDP–Komeito coalition. 連立 involves explicit negotiation over cabinet portfolios and policy priorities, and its stability depends on maintaining consensus between coalition partners.
Examples
- 単独過半数を確保できなかった与党は、他の政党との連立交渉を開始した。 Unable to secure a majority on its own, the ruling party began coalition negotiations with other parties.
- 連立政権の枠組みは保ちつつも、政策の方向性をめぐって両党の溝が深まりつつある。 While maintaining the framework of the coalition government, the gap between the two parties over policy direction is widening.
- 連立を離脱した小政党が野党に転じたことで、与党側の議席が大幅に減少した。 When a small party withdrew from the coalition and joined the opposition, the ruling bloc's seats were significantly reduced.
