恩赦
Meaning
Amnesty; pardon; clemency. An official act by which the state forgives or mitigates the punishment of convicted persons, typically marking a special national occasion.
Composed of 恩 (grace/favour from those in authority) and 赦 (forgiveness/pardon). In Japan, 恩赦 has been granted on occasions such as imperial enthronements and national anniversaries. Several forms exist: 大赦 (general amnesty), 特赦 (special pardon), 減刑 (commutation), and 刑の執行免除 (suspension of execution). The practice reflects the traditional notion of imperial or state benevolence and mercy.
