帰化
Meaning
Naturalisation; becoming a citizen. The legal process by which a foreigner acquires citizenship.
A noun and する verb describing the formal acquisition of nationality, typically by a foreign resident. In Japan, naturalisation (帰化) requires meeting residence, financial, and conduct requirements and renouncing prior nationality. The term also appears in biological contexts (帰化植物 — naturalised plants), but in social and political discourse it refers to citizenship. 帰化申請 (naturalisation application) is a common collocate.
