格付け
Meaning
Rating; ranking; classification; grading. The act of assigning a rank or grade to something based on evaluated criteria.
Composed of 格 (rank/grade) and 付け (assignment/attachment, from 付ける). Common in financial contexts (国債格付け, credit ratings), restaurant and hotel ratings (ミシュランの格付け), and general evaluation of quality or status. The body conducting such evaluations is called a 格付け機関 (rating agency). Used both as a noun and in compound expressions such as 信用格付け (credit rating).
