Meaning

Proclamation; declaration; an official public announcement of policy, law, or a momentous decision issued by a government or sovereign.

A formal noun referring to an official announcement or decree intended for wide public dissemination. 宣戦布告 (declaration of war) is the most common compound. In historical Japan, 布告 referred to edicts issued by the Meiji government. Distinguished from 告示 (official notice) by its gravity and the breadth of its intended audience and impact.
