~に従って / ~に従い
Meaning
Expresses that something changes or occurs spontaneously and gradually in accordance with another change. Can also mean 'following' rules, instructions, or someone's lead.
This pattern has two main uses. First, like につれて, it describes correlated gradual changes where one change triggers or accompanies another. Second, it means 'following' or 'in accordance with' rules, instructions, or authority. The form に従い is more formal and often used in written Japanese. Compared to につれて, に従って can describe both natural changes and deliberate actions taken in response to changes. It also has an obedience nuance — following someone's orders or adhering to regulations — that につれて lacks entirely.
