どうも (somehow / it seems)
Meaning
An adverb indicating that the speaker cannot make a definite statement but senses something based on indirect evidence or intuition. It conveys 'somehow,' 'it seems like,' or 'I have a feeling that.'
どうも in its adverbial sense expresses an uncertain impression or vague feeling that the speaker has about a situation. Unlike はっきり which denotes clarity, どうも suggests the speaker senses something without concrete proof. It commonly pairs with ようだ, らしい, or negative potential forms. The word also has greeting uses (どうも as casual 'thanks' or 'hello'), but this grammar point focuses on the 'somehow/vaguely' meaning. When combined with negative expressions like うまくいかない, it suggests persistent difficulty.

- どうも最近体の調子がよくない。 Somehow I haven't been feeling well lately.
- どうもこの機械の使い方がわからない。 I just can't figure out how to use this machine.
