を (space of movement)
Meaning
A particle that indicates the space, route, or path through, along, across, or over which someone or something moves. It marks the area where movement takes place rather than a destination.
This usage of を differs from the direct object marker. Here, を marks the physical space or route that someone traverses. Common verbs used with this pattern include 歩く, 走る, 飛ぶ, 泳ぐ, 渡る, 通る, and 散歩する. The distinction from で (which also marks locations of activity) is that を implies movement along or through a space, while で marks the general location where an action happens. For example, 公園を散歩する emphasizes walking through the park, while 公園で遊ぶ emphasizes playing within the park as a location. Note that the verbs used with this を are typically intransitive motion verbs.
Examples
- 公園を散歩しました。 I took a walk through the park.
- 鳥が空を飛んでいる。 A bird is flying through the sky.
- 毎朝この道を走ります。 I run along this road every morning.

Origin & History
This spatial use of を is an extension of its original function in Old Japanese, where it broadly indicated the domain or sphere of an action. As the direct object use became dominant, this spatial sense remained with motion verbs.
