~ほうがいい (had better)

Japanese Grammar Basic Japanese ★★★★ 4/5 neutral ほうがいいhou ga ii
Reading ほうがいい
Romaji hou ga ii
Formation Verb た-form + ほうがいい / Verb-ない + ほうがいい

Meaning

Strongly suggests or advises that someone should do something. With the た-form of the verb, it gives positive advice; with the ない-form, it advises against doing something.

ほうがいい is used to give advice or make strong recommendations. When the verb is in the た-form (e.g., 食べたほうがいい), it suggests doing something. When the verb is in the ない-form (e.g., 食べないほうがいい), it advises against an action. The た-form version is much more common and natural for positive suggestions. This pattern can sound somewhat direct or even pushy depending on context, so it is most natural when giving advice to friends, family, or in situations where the advice is clearly warranted. For softer suggestions, たらどうですか is a gentler alternative.

Examples

  1. 風邪を引いたら薬を飲んだほうがいい。 If you catch a cold, you'd better take medicine.
  2. もっと早く寝たほうがいいですよ。 You should go to bed earlier.
  3. 夜遅くにコーヒーを飲まないほうがいい。 You shouldn't drink coffee late at night.
