で (causal)
Meaning
A particle that indicates a reason, cause, or circumstance that leads to a result. It is derived from the て-form of the copula です and expresses a factual or objective cause rather than a subjective reason.
This causal で connects a noun or noun phrase to its consequence, expressing that something happened because of or due to that cause. Common examples include 病気で休む (be absent due to illness), 台風で電車が止まった (trains stopped due to a typhoon), and 仕事で忙しい (busy because of work). Unlike から and ので, which connect clauses and can express subjective reasoning, で attaches directly to nouns and states an objective, factual cause. It is often used for natural events, circumstances, or conditions that lead to a result. The nuance is lighter and more matter-of-fact than ために, which implies a stronger causal chain.
Examples
- 風邪で学校を休みました。 I was absent from school because of a cold.
- 大雪で飛行機が欠航になった。 Flights were cancelled due to heavy snow.
- 仕事で今日は遅くなります。 I will be late today because of work.
