~ことか

Japanese Grammar Advanced Japanese ★★ 2/5 formal ことかkoto ka
Reading ことか
Romaji koto ka
Formation Interrogative + Verb/Adj plain form + ことか

Meaning

An exclamatory sentence-final phrase used primarily in written language to express deep emotion — wonder, admiration, regret, or sorrow — about an extreme degree.

ことか appears at the end of a sentence, typically preceded by interrogative words like どれほど, どんなに, 何度, or いかに, to create a rhetorical exclamation. It does not ask a question but rather expresses overwhelming emotion: 'How much...!' or 'How many times...!' The pattern is distinctly literary and formal, appearing in essays, novels, speeches, and letters rather than casual conversation. It conveys that the speaker is deeply moved and cannot fully measure the extent of their feeling. It is similar to ことだろう but more concise and emotionally charged. Without the preceding interrogative word, the exclamatory force is lost.

Examples

  1. この日をどれほど待ち望んだことか。 How long I have waited for this day!
  2. 恩師の言葉にどんなに救われたことか。 How deeply I was saved by my mentor's words!
  3. あの決断をどれほど後悔したことか。 How much I regretted that decision!
