君・くん (familiar suffix)

Japanese Grammar Basic Japanese ★★★★★ 5/5 casual くんkun
読み くん
ローマ字 kun
First name / Last name + くん
漢字の分解 君 — you (familiar), lord; as suffix: familiar address for males/juniors

意味

A suffix attached to the first or last name of a male equal or to the first or last name of a younger male, expressing familiarity and a degree of closeness.

くん is most commonly used by teachers addressing male students, by seniors addressing junior male colleagues, or among male friends and classmates. In the workplace, it is used by superiors toward younger male subordinates. While traditionally associated with males, it is increasingly used for women in professional settings, particularly in the Japanese Diet (parliament) and some workplaces where it replaces さん for all subordinates regardless of gender. Unlike さん, which maintains polite distance, くん implies a closer relationship or a clear seniority dynamic. Using くん toward someone older or of higher status is generally considered rude. In anime and manga, くん is a well-known marker of friendly male address.
