哄
Meaning
A polyphonic character with three readings. hōng: a loud burst of collective crowd noise. hǒng: to coax, cajole, or placate. hòng: to heckle, stir up, or cause a commotion.
As hōng: describes a collective burst of sound — 哄堂大笑 (the whole room erupting in laughter), 哄然 (in a great roar of noise). As hǒng: to soothe or cajole — 哄孩子 (to coax a child), 哄骗 (to hoodwink with sweet talk). As hòng: to create uproar — 起哄 (to heckle or rile up a crowd; also: to join in a commotion). Context determines the reading; confusion of these three readings is a common learner error.
