Meaning
Backstage; backend; behind-the-scenes backer. Literally the backstage area in theatre; figuratively a powerful patron or hidden supporter, or a backend system in computing.
Has three main usages: (1) theatre: the area backstage where performers prepare; (2) figurative: a powerful person or group providing covert support to someone (often with a slightly negative connotation of corruption or unfair advantage); (3) technology: the backend of a software system or website. Context determines which meaning applies.
