不 vs 没 (negation comparison)

Chinese Grammar Basic Chinese ★★★★★ 5/5 neutral bù / méi
拼音 bù / méi
结构 不 + Verb (habitual/future) vs 没 + Verb (past/factual)

含义

Both 不 (bù) and 没 (méi) express negation, but they are used in different contexts. 不 negates habitual actions, states, and future intentions, while 没 negates past completed actions and the verb 有.

The distinction between 不 and 没 is one of the most important contrasts in Mandarin. 不 operates in the realm of willingness, habit, and general truth — it says 'I choose not to' or 'it is not the case that.' 没 operates in the realm of facts about the past — it says 'it did not happen' or 'I do not possess.' A key test: if the sentence describes something that already happened (or didn't happen), use 没. If it describes a general state, preference, or future plan, use 不. One notable exception is 有, which is always negated with 没, never with 不.

例句

  2. 她不想去,所以昨天没去。

正确说法

  • 我平时不喝酒,昨天也没喝。
  • 他不喜欢运动,所以没报名参加比赛。

错误说法

  • 我昨天不去上课。(Past completed actions require 没, not 不 — 'I didn't go' must be 没去) → 我昨天没去上课。
  • 我没喜欢吃甜的。(Habitual preferences use 不, not 没 — 'I don't like' is 不喜欢) → 我不喜欢吃甜的。
  • 他不有手机。(有 is always negated with 没, never 不 — say 没有, not 不有) → 他没有手机。

起源与历史

The division of labor between 不 and 没 solidified during the Song and Yuan dynasties. Earlier stages of Chinese had a richer system of negative particles, but Modern Mandarin streamlined these into the 不/没 binary that learners must master.
