不 vs 没 (negation comparison)
含义
Both 不 (bù) and 没 (méi) express negation, but they are used in different contexts. 不 negates habitual actions, states, and future intentions, while 没 negates past completed actions and the verb 有.
The distinction between 不 and 没 is one of the most important contrasts in Mandarin. 不 operates in the realm of willingness, habit, and general truth — it says 'I choose not to' or 'it is not the case that.' 没 operates in the realm of facts about the past — it says 'it did not happen' or 'I do not possess.' A key test: if the sentence describes something that already happened (or didn't happen), use 没. If it describes a general state, preference, or future plan, use 不. One notable exception is 有, which is always negated with 没, never with 不.

起源与历史
The division of labor between 不 and 没 solidified during the Song and Yuan dynasties. Earlier stages of Chinese had a richer system of negative particles, but Modern Mandarin streamlined these into the 不/没 binary that learners must master.
