Meaning

Unbearable; intolerable; irresistible. Expresses that something is too intense to endure, whether positive or negative.

An i-adjective expression with two main uses. Negatively, it means 'unbearable': 暑くてたまらない (unbearably hot). Positively, it means 'irresistible': かわいくてたまらない (irresistibly cute). Formed from 堪る (tamaru, to endure) + ない. The pattern ~てたまらない is essential at N3 level. Sometimes written 堪らない in kanji but hiragana is standard.
