和議
Meaning
Peace conference; compromise; a negotiated settlement or arrangement between parties in conflict.
和議 covers a range of negotiated agreements — from diplomatic peace treaties to business settlements and legal compositions. Historically Japan's old bankruptcy law provided a 和議 procedure allowing a financially distressed company to reach a compromise with creditors to avoid full bankruptcy proceedings. The term is formal and appears in both political and commercial legal contexts. In everyday language, 和解 is more commonly used for personal settlements.
