扇状地
Meaning
Alluvial fan; fan-shaped plain. A fan-shaped deposit of sediment formed where a fast-flowing stream loses velocity upon entering a flatland at the base of a mountain.
A geographical and geological noun. 扇状地 forms when a mountain stream suddenly decelerates upon reaching a plain, depositing coarse gravel and sand in a characteristic fan shape. The well-drained, gravelly soil of alluvial fans is prized for fruit cultivation in Japan, as seen in the orchards of Yamanashi Prefecture. The term appears in textbooks, geographic surveys, and agricultural discussions.
