領事
Meaning
Consul. An official appointed by a state to reside in a foreign city and protect the state's commercial interests and assist its citizens there.
Distinguished from an ambassador (大使, taishi), who represents the state at the highest diplomatic level in a foreign capital, a 領事 (consul) typically operates in commercial cities or regions outside the capital. The consulate is 領事館 (ryōjikan). Senior consular officials include 総領事 (sōryōji, consul-general) and 副領事 (fukuryōji, vice-consul). Consular duties include issuing visas, certifying documents, and assisting citizens in emergencies.
