限界集落
Meaning
Marginal settlement; dying village. A rural community where over half the population is aged 65 or older, and whose continued existence is under threat.
A sociological term coined by scholar Ōno Akira in 1991 to describe depopulated rural communities on the verge of collapse. The defining threshold is when those aged 65 and over account for more than 50% of residents, making it difficult to maintain community functions such as agriculture, infrastructure upkeep, and social care. The concept has become central to debates about Japan's rural decline and ageing society.
