Meaning

Marks a condition that brings about an uncontrollable, inevitable, or habitual result. It expresses natural consequences, automatic outcomes, or discoveries.

と as a conditional connects two clauses where the first condition naturally or inevitably leads to the second result. It is used for habitual actions, natural phenomena, mechanical operations, and giving directions. The main clause cannot contain volitional expressions, requests, commands, or invitations because the result must follow automatically from the condition. When describing a past event with と, it can express a discovery or unexpected finding, functioning like 'and then' or 'when I did X, I found that Y.' This makes と distinct from たら and ば, which allow more speaker-controlled outcomes.
