~が (but/however)

Japanese Grammar Basic Japanese ★★★★★ 5/5 neutral ga
Reading
Romaji ga
Formation Sentence 1 (polite/plain) + が + Sentence 2

Meaning

A conjunction that connects two contrasting or unexpected clauses. The first clause states a situation, and the second clause presents a contrast or an unexpected follow-up.

As a conjunction, が joins two complete clauses where the second clause presents information that contrasts with or is unexpected given the first. Unlike けれども, which can be shortened to けど in casual speech, が maintains a slightly more formal tone and is widely used in both spoken and written Japanese. が can also serve as a soft introduction where the contrast is mild or the speaker is being indirect. For instance, すみませんが is polite and softening, not truly contrastive. Learners should not confuse this conjunctive が with the subject-marking particle が.

Examples

  1. 日本語を勉強しましたが、まだ上手に話せません。 I studied Japanese, but I still can't speak it well.
  2. 値段は高いですが、品質はとてもいいです。 The price is high, but the quality is very good.
  3. メールを送りましたが、まだ返事はありません。 I sent an email, but there's still no reply.

Usage Guide

Context: spoken, written, everyday

Tone: contrastive

Do Say

  • 映画を見たいですが、時間がありません。
  • この店は遠いですが、料理がおいしいです。
  • すみませんが、道を教えていただけますか。

Don't Say

  • 映画を見たいだが、時間がない。(だ before が sounds unnatural after い-adjectives — use plain form without だ: 映画を見たいが、時間がない) → 映画を見たいが、時間がない。
  • 暑いですが、でもエアコンをつけない。(が and でも are both contrastive — using both is redundant: 暑いですが、エアコンをつけない) → 暑いですが、エアコンをつけない。

Origin & History

Derived from the classical conjunctive particle が, which originally connected clauses with an adversative nuance. Over time it developed both contrastive and softening functions in modern Japanese.
