そのもの
Meaning
A phrase used after a noun or adjective to mean 'the very thing itself' or 'nothing other than that.' It emphasizes that something is exactly and purely what is described, without qualification.
そのもの narrows focus to the essential identity of the preceding noun, stripping away peripheral associations. When placed after a noun, it means 'X itself' or 'X per se,' stressing that the discussion concerns X in its purest sense rather than its consequences, context, or related matters. It can also follow adjectives in their dictionary form to mean 'is the very embodiment of that quality.' For example, 彼の態度は傲慢そのものだ means 'His attitude is arrogance itself.' Unlike 自体, which emphasizes the subject as a surprising or noteworthy entity, そのもの highlights purity and essence. It is common in formal essays, speeches, and analytical writing but also appears in emphatic everyday speech.
