Reading なんて

Formation なんて + Adjective / Adjective + Noun / Clause

Meaning

A colloquial version of なんと, used as an exclamatory adverb meaning 'how...!' or 'what a...!' It expresses strong emotion — surprise, admiration, disbelief, or dismay — about something the speaker finds remarkable.

As the casual counterpart of なんと, なんて introduces an exclamation about the degree or nature of something. It can precede adjectives (なんて美しい — how beautiful!) or stand before a clause to express astonishment. Unlike なんと, which is appropriate in formal contexts and public speeches, なんて is restricted to casual and semi-casual registers. It should not be confused with the particle なんて, which expresses disdain or belittlement. The exclamatory なんて typically appears at the beginning of a phrase or clause and carries strong emotional colouring. It is extremely common in everyday spoken Japanese and informal writing.

Examples

  1. なんて鮮やかな夕焼けなんだろう。 What a vivid sunset!
  2. なんて複雑な仕組みになっているのだろうか。 How complex this mechanism is!
  3. なんて心温まる話なのだろう。 What a heartwarming story!
