Realism; realistic depiction; faithful representation of subjects as they actually appear.

A noun central to art and literary criticism, describing the practice of portraying subjects without idealisation or embellishment. Frequently appears in compounds such as 写実主義 (realism as a movement) and 写実的 (realistic, true to life).
