Meaning

To lump everything together; to make a sweeping generalisation; to treat all cases the same without regard for differences.

A four-character idiom (成语) almost always used in the negative: 不能一概而论 (cannot make sweeping generalisations) or 不宜一概而论. It signals the need to consider nuance, context, or individual variation, and is common in academic argument, critical analysis, and rational discourse.

  • 他一概而论地解释了 — 一概而论 is typically used in the negative or as a warning against oversimplification; using it neutrally or positively (他一概而论地解释了一切) implies faulty reasoning, which is rarely what a speaker intends positively; restructure to 他给出了一个笼统的解释 if a neutral description is needed
