核
Meaning
Core; nucleus; kernel. The central, essential, or most critical part of something. Also: nuclear (as a prefix in scientific and military contexts).
As a standalone morpheme and word, 核 encompasses the literal sense of a seed or fruit stone, the biological nucleus of a cell, the nucleus of an atom (hence 核能, 核武器), and the figurative core of a system, argument, or leadership structure (核心). Its versatility makes it one of the most productive morphemes in modern Chinese scientific and political vocabulary.
