Meaning
To be known as; to claim to be; to be reputed as. Used when describing a name or reputation, sometimes with sceptical overtones.
Can be neutral (officially known as) or carry light scepticism (claims to be, but...). Often used in journalism and commentary to introduce claimed titles, reputations, or exaggerated boasts. Different from 被称为 which is purely neutral.
Examples
- 这支球队号称世界上最强的俱乐部,却在首轮就被淘汰了。 This team claims to be the strongest club in the world, yet it was eliminated in the first round.
- 该公司号称拥有数百项专利,实际情况有待核实。 The company claims to hold hundreds of patents, but the facts still need to be verified.
- 这座城市号称东方的巴黎,吸引了众多游客前来参观。 This city is known as the Paris of the East, attracting countless tourists to visit.

- 他号称是业内顶尖专家,但实际经验并不丰富。(He is reputed to be a top expert in the field, but his actual experience is limited.)
Don't Say
- 号称 for purely factual official names — use 被命名为 or 正式名称为 when there is no implied doubt
