Meaning

Ultimately; at the end of the day; when all is said and done. An adverbial phrase indicating that after tracing everything back to its fundamental cause or source, one arrives at a core conclusion.

A very common connecting phrase in Chinese argumentation, used to introduce the fundamental conclusion or root cause of a discussion. Equivalent in function to 'ultimately' or 'at bottom' in English academic writing. Often appears at the start of a concluding statement or as a pivot in argument. Variant form: 归根结底.
