慢车

Chinese HSK 6 Vocabulary Chinese ★★★ 3/5 neutral màn chē
Pinyin màn chē
Hanzi breakdown 慢 = 忄(heart) + 曼 (phonetic), slow; 车 = simplified vehicle radical

Meaning

Slow train; local train. A train that stops at every station, as opposed to an express.

Contrasts with 快车 (express train) or 特快 (limited express). 慢车 stops at every station, taking longer but serving smaller towns. Often cheaper than express services. Common in older rail networks; being phased out as high-speed rail expands. Can metaphorically mean a slow, methodical approach.

Examples

  1. 这趟慢车要停十几个站,比高铁慢三个小时。 This slow train stops at over ten stations and is three hours slower than the high-speed rail.
  2. 票已经卖光了,只剩下慢车的站票,你要不要? The tickets are sold out — only standing room on the slow train is left. Do you want it?
  3. 他不赶时间,特意选了慢车,想沿途看看风景。 He wasn't in a hurry, so he deliberately chose the slow train to enjoy the scenery along the way.
