Meaning

Hard to say; cannot be determined (V); maybe; perhaps; possibly (Adv). Expresses uncertainty about an outcome, often with a hint of mild surprise at the possibility.

Most commonly used as an adverb at the start of a clause to introduce a possibility the speaker cannot confirm. Equivalent to 也许 or 可能 but more colloquial. Often implies a slightly unexpected possibility. Typically followed by a sentence or clause, and rarely used alone in formal writing.

Don't Say

  • 在正式书面语中用'说不定'代替'可能' (Avoid using 说不定 in formal written Chinese — use 可能 or 也许 instead, as 说不定 is conversational)

Origin & History

A compound predicate made of 说 (to say) + 不定 (not certain/unstable), literally 'cannot say for certain'. Over time it grammaticalised into a colloquial adverb of probability.
