Meaning
Beautiful; pretty; fine. A general term for beauty, applicable to appearance, scenery, experiences, and abstract concepts.
One of the most versatile adjectives in Chinese. Can describe visual beauty (风景很美 = the scenery is beautiful), pleasant experiences (美梦 = beautiful dream), and even taste (美味 = delicious). Also used in many compound words: 美丽, 美好, 美食, 美术, 美元. In casual speech, 美 can mean pleased or happy (心里美滋滋的). Much broader in scope than 漂亮 which focuses mainly on visual attractiveness.
