那么 (then...)
Meaning
那么 is used to introduce a suggestion, decision, or logical consequence based on a preceding situation or condition. It connects a premise to a natural conclusion, similar to 'then' or 'in that case' in English.
那么 functions as a transitional connector that takes a stated situation and draws a conclusion or offers a suggestion. It often appears in the second clause of a conditional or situational statement, signaling that the following action or opinion logically follows from what was just said. Unlike 然后 which indicates sequential time, 那么 indicates logical consequence. It can be shortened to 那 in casual speech. Learners sometimes confuse 那么 with 那样 (in that way/manner), but 那么 introduces conclusions while 那样 describes manner or degree.
