再 (again in the future)

Chinese Grammar Basic Chinese ★★★★★ 5/5 neutral zài
Pinyin zài
Formation Subject + 再 + Verb Phrase
Hanzi breakdown 再 = 一 (one) + 冂 (enclosure) + 土 (earth) — originally a pictograph suggesting repetition

Meaning

The adverb 再 (zài) expresses doing something 'again' in the future or repeating an action that has not yet happened. It always refers to actions that will occur from this point forward.

再 and 又 (yòu) both translate to 'again' in English, but they differ in tense. 再 is exclusively for future or unrealized actions, while 又 refers to past actions that have already been repeated. For example, 他明天再来 means 'he will come again tomorrow,' but 他昨天又来了 means 'he came again yesterday.' 再 can also express 'then' in sequences: 先吃饭,再写作业 means 'eat first, then do homework.' In negative commands, 别再 or 不要再 means 'don't do it again.' 再 is always placed before the verb it modifies.

Examples

  1. 下次我们再去那家餐厅吃饭吧。 Let's go to that restaurant again next time.
  2. 这个话题太复杂,明天再讨论。 This topic is too complex; let's discuss it again tomorrow.
  3. 你先休息一下,等会儿再做作业。 Rest for a bit first, then do your homework later.
