是...的 (emphasis)
Meaning
The 是...的 (shì...de) construction is used to emphasize specific details about a past event that has already happened, such as the time, place, manner, or person involved.
The 是...的 pattern highlights background details of a known past action. The speaker and listener already know the action occurred — the point is to focus on when, where, how, or who. 是 is placed before the detail being emphasized, and 的 goes at the end of the sentence (or before the object in some cases). For example, 我是坐飞机来的 emphasizes the mode of travel. 是 can be omitted in casual speech, but 的 is essential. This pattern is different from the simple past with 了, which reports that something happened; 是...的 presupposes the event and zooms in on a specific aspect.

- 我是去年搬到这个城市的。 It was last year that I moved to this city.

Origin & History
The 是...的 construction evolved from the copula 是 (to be) combined with the nominalizing particle 的. Together they create a cleft-like focus structure, similar to 'It was... that...' in English, allowing the speaker to foreground one detail of a past event.
