因⋯⋯而 (because...therefore)

Chinese Grammar Advanced Chinese ★★★ 3/5 formal ér
Pinyin ér
Formation Subject + 因(为) + Cause + 而 + Result

Meaning

The pattern 因(为)⋯⋯而 connects a cause to its resulting action or state. The word 而 (ér) functions as a conjunction linking the reason introduced by 因 or 因为 to the outcome that follows.

This structure is more formal and literary than the everyday 因为⋯⋯所以 pattern. While 因为⋯⋯所以 is common in casual speech, 因⋯⋯而 appears frequently in news reports, academic writing, official statements, and formal narratives. The 为 in 因为 is optional — 因 alone is sufficient in this pattern. The result after 而 is typically concise, often a verb phrase or short predicate. This construction emphasizes the causal relationship more tightly than 因为⋯⋯所以, because the cause and effect are contained within a single clause rather than split across two independent clauses.

Examples

  1. 他因工作压力过大而辞职了。 He resigned due to excessive work pressure.
  2. 很多古镇因旅游开发而失去了原有的风貌。 Many ancient towns lost their original character because of tourism development.
  3. 她因成绩优异而获得了全额奖学金。 She received a full scholarship on account of her outstanding grades.

Origin & History
