无非 (nothing but)

Chinese Grammar Advanced Chinese ★★★ 3/5 neutral wúfēi
Pinyin wúfēi
Formation 无非 + (是) + Noun / Verb Phrase
Hanzi breakdown 无 = simplified from 無, meaning without/nothing; 非 = two opposing wings, meaning not/wrong

Meaning

无非 (wúfēi) means 'nothing but,' 'merely,' or 'simply.' It minimizes the significance of something, suggesting that the matter at hand is limited to a certain scope and is not as complicated or important as it might seem.

无非 downplays or reduces something to its essence, often carrying a dismissive or understating tone. It is commonly followed by 是 and then a noun or verb phrase that reveals the real or only substance of the matter. Unlike 只是 which neutrally states 'only,' 无非 adds an evaluative layer — implying 'it's nothing more than this, so don't overthink it.' It can be used to comfort someone (the problem is nothing but...), to criticize (his motive is nothing but...), or to analyze (the options are nothing but...). It appears more often in written or semi-formal spoken Chinese.

  3. 这道题看起来很难,无非是换了一种问法而已。 This problem looks difficult, but it's merely phrased in a different way.

无非 combines 无 (without/not) and 非 (wrong/not), creating a double negative that means 'there is nothing it is not' — which paradoxically conveys 'it is nothing other than.' This classical double-negative construction is preserved in modern usage.
