忧郁
含义
Melancholic; depressed; gloomy. A deeper, more pervasive sadness — often with literary, artistic, or psychological connotations.
More internalised and temperamental than 忧愁 (sorrowful) and more emotionally tinged than 忧虑 (anxious). Can describe a person's personality, a work's atmosphere, or a momentary mood. 忧郁症 is one term for depression. In literature and arts criticism, 忧郁气质 (melancholic temperament) is valued as a sign of depth and sensitivity. Associated with Romantic-era aesthetics.
