两三 (number approximation)
含义
In Chinese, placing two consecutive numbers together expresses an approximate quantity, similar to 'two or three' or 'about four or five' in English. The two numbers must be consecutive (e.g., 两三, 四五, 七八) and are followed by a measure word and noun.
This approximation pattern is extremely common in everyday conversation and adds a natural, casual tone to estimates. The numbers must always be consecutive — you cannot skip numbers (e.g., 三五 is not standard). For numbers involving tens, the pattern can span the tens digit, as in 十五六 (fifteen or sixteen). This pattern often appears with 大概 or 大约 for additional hedging. Unlike using 左右 (approximately) which follows the number, sequential number approximation replaces the exact number entirely.
(Do not use 和 between sequential approximating numbers — just say 三四个人) → 他们三四个人一起来了。
起源与历史
This approximation pattern using consecutive numbers is a fundamental feature of spoken Chinese that allows speakers to express imprecise quantities naturally. It reflects the Chinese preference for paired structures in expressing estimates.
