選挙区
Meaning
Electoral district; constituency. A geographic area whose residents are entitled to elect one or more representatives to a legislative body.
Japan uses a mixed electoral system combining single-member districts (小選挙区) and proportional representation (比例代表). Recurring political debate over 一票の格差 (the disparity in voter representation between districts) has prompted repeated court rulings and demands for redistricting. The term is essential vocabulary for understanding Japanese elections.
