Meaning

Neighbourhood association; residents' association. A grassroots civic body that coordinates local activities and mutual aid within a defined residential area.

Also called 自治会 (jichikai) in some regions, 町内会 are the backbone of Japanese community life. They organise rubbish collection schedules, disaster drills, festivals (祭り), and elderly welfare checks.
