町内会
Meaning
Neighbourhood association; residents' association. A grassroots civic body that coordinates local activities and mutual aid within a defined residential area.
Also called 自治会 (jichikai) in some regions, 町内会 are the backbone of Japanese community life. They organise rubbish collection schedules, disaster drills, festivals (祭り), and elderly welfare checks. Membership is voluntary but strongly encouraged. Their role in disaster response (as seen after the 2011 earthquake) has been widely praised; concerns about declining participation among younger urban residents are ongoing.
