映え
Meaning
Photogenic or Instagram-worthy — used to describe food, scenery, or anything that looks great in photos.
Shortened from インスタ映え (Instagram-worthy), 映え became a standalone adjective/noun describing anything visually appealing enough to post on social media. It heavily influences food culture, with cafes and restaurants designing dishes specifically for their 映え appeal. The term was selected as one of Japan's buzzwords of the year in 2017.
