Meaning

A particle used to emphatically affirm or negate a proposition, often conveying 'at least' or 'indeed' to stress a particular aspect of a statement.

Beyond its primary role as a topic marker, は has an emphatic function when it highlights a contrast or affirmation. In sentences like 読みはした ('I did read it, at least'), は emphasizes that the action was completed, often implying a 'but' — something else was not done, or the result was not as expected. In negative sentences, は strengthens the negation: 行きはしない ('I certainly won't go'). This emphatic は follows verb stems, adjectives, and other elements, and it is distinct from the topic-marking は. It creates a nuance of partial affirmation, concession, or strong denial.

Examples

  1. 読みはしたが、内容はあまり覚えていない。 I did read it, but I don't really remember the content.
  2. あの映画、面白くはあったが、少し長すぎた。 That movie was interesting, I'll give it that, but it was a bit too long.
  3. 彼が来ることは来たが、すぐに帰ってしまった。 He did come, but he left right away.

Usage Guide

Context: spoken, written, everyday

Tone: emphatic

Do Say

  • 食べはしたけど、おいしくなかった。
  • 聞きはしたが、よく分からなかった。
  • 安くはないが、品質はいい。

Don't Say

  • 食べはした、おいしかった。(Using emphatic は without any implied contrast or reservation — emphatic は typically sets up a 'but' clause) → 食べはしたが、量が少なかった。
  • 私はしたはしない。(Placing は in an ungrammatical position — emphatic は follows the verb stem, not randomly in the sentence) → 私はそんなことはしない。

Origin & History

The topic particle は extends into an emphatic role through its inherent contrastive function. When は marks something other than the sentence topic, it highlights that element against an implicit contrast.
