ところが

Japanese Grammar Intermediate Japanese ★★★ 3/5 neutral ところがtokoro ga
Reading ところが
Romaji tokoro ga
Formation Sentence A (expectation)。ところが、Sentence B (unexpected reality)

Meaning

A conjunction used to present what actually happened or what is actually the case, in contrast to what was expected. It is similar to 'however' or 'but contrary to expectations' in English.

ところが marks a strong contrast between an expectation or assumption and the actual outcome. It is typically placed at the beginning of a sentence that reveals the unexpected reality. Unlike でも or しかし, which are neutral conjunctions, ところが carries a built-in sense of surprise or counter-expectation — the speaker signals that the result was not what anyone would have predicted. It is commonly used in storytelling and narrative. Because of its dramatic quality, it tends to appear more in written narratives and spoken anecdotes than in dry, factual prose. The clause before ところが sets up the expectation, and the clause after reveals the twist.

Examples

  1. 天気予報では晴れだった。ところが、急に雨が降り出した。 The forecast said it would be sunny. However, it suddenly started raining.
  2. 簡単な試験だと思っていた。ところが、問題がとても難しかった。 I thought it would be an easy exam. But the questions were very difficult.
  3. 彼は来ないと言っていた。ところが、突然現れた。 He said he wouldn't come. But he suddenly showed up.
