~みせる (to show determination)

Japanese Grammar Intermediate Japanese ★★★ 3/5 neutral みせるmiseru
Reading みせる
Romaji miseru
Formation Verb て-form + みせる
Kanji breakdown 見せる — 見 (み, to see/look)

Meaning

An auxiliary verb attached to the て-form of a verb, expressing the speaker's strong determination or resolve to accomplish something, with the nuance of proving it to others. It conveys 'I will definitely do it' or 'I'll show you I can.'

てみせる combines the て-form with 見せる (to show), but as a grammatical pattern it goes beyond literal showing. It expresses the speaker's fierce resolve to achieve something, often in the face of doubt or difficulty. The nuance is 'I will do this and prove it' — there is an implicit audience whose expectations the speaker intends to meet or exceed. It is commonly used in motivational contexts, sports, dramatic declarations, and personal vows. It differs from てみる (to try doing) which simply means attempting something without the determination nuance.

Examples

  1. 今度の試合では絶対に勝ってみせる。 I will definitely win the next match — just watch me.
  2. 三か月以内にこのプロジェクトを完成させてみせます。 I will complete this project within three months, I promise.
  3. 誰に何と言われても、夢を叶えてみせる。 No matter what anyone says, I will make my dream come true.

  • どんなに難しくても、最後までやり遂げてみせます。

Don't Say

  • 明日は早く起きてみせる。(てみせる implies strong resolve against difficulty or doubt; waking up early is too trivial for this expression) → 明日は早く起きるつもりだ。
  • 水を飲んでみせた。(Using てみせる for a mundane action with no challenge or determination context sounds unnatural) → 水を飲んだ。
  • ご飯を食べてみせる。(Eating a meal does not warrant a declaration of determination; reserve for challenging goals) → ご飯を食べる。

Origin & History

Derived from 見せる (to show/display). When attached to a て-form verb, it evolved from the literal meaning of 'doing something and showing the result' to expressing strong personal determination, as if declaring one's resolve for all to witness.
