代議士
意味
Member of parliament; representative. Specifically, a member of the House of Representatives (衆議院) of the Japanese National Diet.
代議士 literally means 'representative' — one who discusses and decides on behalf of the people — but in modern Japanese usage it refers almost exclusively to members of the lower house (衆議院議員). Members of the upper house (参議院) are not typically referred to as 代議士. The term carries respect; elected officials are also commonly addressed as 先生 by staff and constituents.
