遗忘
Meaning
To forget; to fail to remember; to slip from memory. Refers to the gradual or complete loss of a memory, fact, or person from one's consciousness.
More literary and formal than 忘记. Often used for things that have been forgotten over time, or for the process of forgetting itself. Common in discussions of memory, history, trauma, and ageing. 遗忘曲线 (the forgetting curve — Ebbinghaus) is a term in educational psychology. Collocates with 被遗忘 (to be forgotten by others).
